A Delayed Birthday Present

This past Thursday, the hubs and I went to a concert. Last year, there was an awesome show called 'The Sing Off' that only featured acapella groups. The winning group was Pentatonix. And they deserved it! So for my birthday (which was in September), my madre-in-law got me tickets to see them in Atlanta. After waiting 2 months, the day finally arrived.

Here are the highlights. The pictures do not even touch on how amazing they were!

I'll introduce you.

This is Scott,

Mitch,

Kirstie,

Avi,

 and Kevin.

The group originally started with these three in high school. Before trying out for the Sing Off, they added Avi and Kevin. In fact, the five of them did not meet face-to-face until the day of tryouts!

Meat and potatoes... Avi is the bass, Kevin is the beat.

It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. You don't even care that there aren't any instruments because they're so ridiculously good! If you ever get a chance, go see them! You won't be disappointed.

Here's a video. I hope you see my point.

Decorate!

I was SO excited to decorate for Christmas this year! A few months back I decided on a color scheme and did what I could to make it happen. Today, you get to take a short tour of our humble Christmassy home! Please enjoy!

This is what adorns our kitchen table. I've been collecting pinecones for some time and now I have a place to put them! And I simply spray painted tree limbs that I found around our yard. I had all the other supplies so I didn't spend any extra $$ for this project. Oh wait, I had to buy spray paint but that was $1.00. :)

Coffee beans and a vanilla mint tealight... heavenly aroma!

This is a little corner nook in our living room. I already had everything you see here except for the snowflake ornaments and tree topper. I borrowed the window from a friend.

I cleared everything off the shelves and replaced is with these beauties! I love it all, from the pinecone garland to the mason jars full of rock salt snow and tealights.

Here's the breakdown: Yes, I got this idea from pinterest (so shoot me). I painted the "N" and "L". I like the "snowy" effect that I came up with (it was really a coincidence).

I spray painted this star that I already had and filled in the blank spaces with mason jars filled with rock salt (which is only $1-ish at Wal-Mart) and added more vanilla mint tealights. The twine gives it a nice touch too, don'tcha think?

I made this ornament tree a couple of years ago. I'm glad it gets to be showcased this year! Oh and this pinecone! Isn't it perfect?!

Who doesn't love a jar of twinkle lights?

A basket of twinkle lights and ornaments. Now tell me how that doesn't put you in the Christmas mood!

I'm beginning to love burlap and twine.

And that about does it, folks. I've always been drawn to the blues and snowy look of Christmas. I'm pretty satsfied with how our little space turned out. Happy decorating!!

A Fall Day, #19

Sunday afternoon, I went on a search for some pinecones at Kiesel Park in Auburn.

If you're an Auburn resident, you know of this wonderful place. Here there are trails to walk/run, a huge dog pen to socialize your dogs, and a great venue to get married at (trust me, I've been to one there and it was beautiful!). And all this is only a 5 minute walk from my house. How lucky is that!

As I was walking back with my basketful of pricklies, I started noticing that autumn was busting at the seams. I rushed home to get my husband, our dog, and a camera (hence #19: take more pictures). Here is what we captured (our camera is not the best in the world, but I hope you can get a sense of how awesome our Sunday was):

I absolutely LOVE fall in Auburn! It means football, boots & scarves, pumpkins, hay bales, and days like Sunday! Take time to enjoy it because it sure doesn't last long enough here!

Community

This is post 2 of my testimony. Post 1 can be found here.

So I left you last in our home on Sunday mornings.

Not only did we have church in our home, we also met with a group of believers about once or twice a year. We called them "Gatherings".

I don't know the details on when these gatherings came about, who started them, or even how we all got to know each other (it must have been the Lord). I just know for as long as I can remember, I looked forward to these because it was a whole weekend of getting to play with cabbage patch dolls, trade stickers, play wall-ball and hide-and-go-seek (in the dark, of course) with some AWESOME kids.

You might be wondering what this has to do with my faith. Well, while we children were having a blast, our parents were also having a blast talking about Jesus. And we children knew that. We knew who was the reason for us getting to see each other. And that person was Jesus.

I don't think there was ever an agenda when they met. Everyone would just come into town on a Friday night and stay until after lunch on Sunday. Now that I'm older, I kind of wish I had sat in on those talks; but I don't regret knowing that my parents were wanting community and going after it.

Gatherings eventually faded as people got older and lives changed. My parents started to see that this yearn for more community was of heaven. They began asking questions and praying for the next step. This was the beginning of our journey with Westgate. I remember having one of our many family meetings when I was in seventh grade about starting to search for a church community. We decided that we would go about our lives and the next person to ask any of us to go to church with them would be where we would go. And then we prayed over this. We called it "laying out a fleece". (reference to Gideon)

It took a whole year before we were asked to go to Westgate. Remembering our prayer, we realized this was where God wanted the Baugh family.

Westgate has such a special place in my heart just as our home bible studies do. There I discovered the awesomeness of a youth group- how teens of all ages can know the love of the Father just as our parents do and worship Him together. I learned how to cherish friendship with another sister in Christ. I realized that there are others who are in need of what I have, and I have the ability to give it to them. And I grew a little deeper into the heart of God.

Because of Westgate, I got to experience the wonder that is IMPACT. Impact is a Christian youth summer camp held at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. Hundreds of teenagers from church youth groups attend this week long extravaganza. There are worship session, break out classes, amazing speakers, and nighttime devos.

It was here that I decided to be baptized... and that is another post in and of itself...

Tune in next time. :)

Testimony, Part One

I've had this draft saved for several weeks now, but I couldn't finish it. I felt like I was leaving parts out, not giving some parts enough credit, and just getting bogged down in WORDS.

But I haven't ever really told my testimony, let alone written it down. I've given five-minutes talks about where I've come from, I've hit the highlights, and I've shared bits and pieces of intimate moments that the Lord and I have shared. All have culminated into what most of my testimony is about, but they're not all in one place. Every part of my story overlaps the other parts.

So here is part one of my testimony. The beginning.

Church service. I didn't go.
Bible class. Nope.
Vacation bible school. Not present.
I didn't learn the books of the bible until I was in high school (and I still probably can't straight-up list them for you.)
I didn't sing "Father Abraham" or "This Little Light of Mine".
I didn't make crosses out of popsicle sticks to be put on the refrigerator.
None of it.

Sundays morning were spent on the couch, most times in my pajamas, listening to my dad teach me, my brother and sister about Jesus. There were no time constraints. We began when everyone was coherent enough and ended when my mom started to fix lunch.

I grew up hearing the name of Jesus without ever stepping into a building.

Why? (Image you are watching a movie and the main character has a flashback. This is what this next section is like.)

It began with my parents because let's face it, our parents' testimonies run into ours. (Mind you, this is from my perspective. You'll have to ask my dad for specific details.)

They both grew up going to church every time the doors were open. They grew up believing certain things about God, not by their own choosing but by what they heard others in the church say. Some truth, some not. Somewhere along the way, my dad realized that not everything he thought he knew about God was truth and he questioned those things. And that's when God moves the most.

To make a long story short, the things that God was teaching my dad made people uncomfortable at the church my parents were attending. And through a series of events, my parents decided that they wanted to provide their children (that's me :) an atmosphere where we could ask questions and learn openly. What better place than our home.

Side note: Never have I thought of my parents as spiteful people. Their decision to have church in our home was a very personal decision and by no means did they choose this out of disregard for others.

Flashback over and we zoom back into my childhood.
Lately, God has been blowing me away by how much I remember about those morning bible studies. Back then, I had trouble staying awake, paying attention, and even acting like I was paying attention. It is only through His wonderful grace that I am reminded of the concrete truths I learned.

I remember one particular Sunday morning when dad was trying to get us to understand the whole point of the bible. When my dad is teaching something, he asks you questions to get you to his point. Rarely does he simply state his point. He wants you to have this light bulb moment. It is sometimes frustrating, but very effective. Anyway, after what seemed like the whole morning (and probably was because we kids were sometimes non-responsive), we finally discovered what the whole point of the bible is. You ready?

Jesus.

There was no light bulb that went off that day for me. But here is where God is so good: these past couple months, I've been learning so much about who God is and what his purpose is. Years later, the light bulb moment has occurred: His purpose always points to the person of Jesus. And so does the bible. And I can point back to that day on the couch in my flannel pajamas and say, "God was planting seeds in me."

That's just an example of the things I learned at home on Sunday mornings. We went through the whole Old Testament. My dad created this awesome timeline that summed up major events in the bible. It started with Creation, Fall, Flood and ended with Jesus, Apostles, Believers. (Forgive me that I don't remember all of it.) We went through the kings era, much like a history lesson. And also several of the gospels.

I have never and will never regret not attending church services growing up. God has taught me that His church is everywhere, not just in a building on Sundays. And we were being the church back then, the five of us.

God used (and is still using) that time in our life to it's utmost potential. I'm so thankful for my parents listening to His leading.

That is the foundation for my walk with the Lord. I would love to hear yours!

Note: I probably won't write my testimony in consecutive blogs, but I intend to link the others on each new blog. So keep a look out for the next part of my testimony. We've got a ways to go.

The weekend (#21)

I had a great girl weekend. I spent it all with my friends from high school. It's so amazing how much we've changed and grown into ourselves. But we can still revert to our teen years and remember how silly and crazy we were. What got us together, you ask? A wedding, of course! My best friend in high school married her high school sweetheart. That's right, eight-ish years together. I couldn't be happier for them! Here's the highlights starting with Friday night:

Dinner & mustaches

Rayne & me                                                               Kaitlin & me

Beautiful centerpieces!

Yummy favors! (no one else sat at our table so we took more than one)

It's nice that I don't have to scramble over other girls to catch a bouquet anymore! :)

Isn't she radiant?!

And they lived happily ever after! I just love weddings.
